How to Reduce Pressure and Friction on a Bunion

To reduce pressure on a bunion, start with a shoe that is wide and deep enough at the forefoot. Remove seams or tight contact over the prominence where possible, choose socks that do not bunch, and consider a thin bunion pad only if it creates cushioning without making the shoe tighter. Check the skin after walking and stop any device that causes pain, numbness or discoloration.

Fix the source of pressure first

Padding cannot compensate for a shoe that is fundamentally too narrow. Compare the shoe outline with your standing foot and check both width and depth.

Use padding carefully

A pad can shield a friction point, but thick material inside a tight shoe may increase compression. Position it around rather than directly on the most sensitive spot when designed for that purpose, and follow its instructions.

Plan for walking and standing

Build activity gradually during a flare, take practical breaks and change footwear when a known pair repeatedly triggers symptoms. Track whether discomfort comes from the bump, the joint or the ball of the foot.

Pressure, friction and crowding are related but different

Build a low-friction shoe setup

  • Check the shoe lining for rough edges or worn areas.
  • Use the thinnest effective pad and reassess shoe space.
  • Lace the shoe so the heel is secure without compressing the forefoot.

What to do during a pressure flare

Switch away from the triggering shoe, reduce the aggravating activity when practical and inspect the skin. Do not place a rigid device over a blister or open area. Persistent redness that does not fade after pressure is removed, worsening swelling or broken skin deserves advice—especially with diabetes or reduced sensation.

When toe-to-toe rubbing is the main problem

A soft spacer may reduce contact between the first and second toes if the shoe has enough room. If the spacer makes the forefoot feel tighter, it is solving separation at the cost of compression. A clinician can help when toes overlap, calluses recur or skin is breaking down.
